Interactive Brokers Group Inc. (NASDAQ: IBKR) has announced three new investor programs through Interactive Brokers Securities Japan Inc. (IBSJ), giving Japanese investors additional ways to reduce trading costs and generate income from eligible cash balances and fully paid shares. The broker said the new offerings focus on making more of an investor’s portfolio productive while maintaining transparency around costs and potential earnings. In particular, Interactive Brokers has introduced a margin financing approach that charges interest only on the portion of a position that a client actually finances.
Therefore, investors who contribute part of the purchase amount in cash do not pay interest on the entire position value. The broker said this method is already widely used in international markets and is now available to investors in Japan. In addition, IBSJ has launched Gaika+, which allows eligible non-Japanese yen cash balances to generate income in yen through automatic overnight currency swaps. The program applies when the interest rate available on the non-JPY currency exceeds the corresponding yen interest rate.
Interactive Brokers Launches Three New Investor Programs
Moreover, the broker said the arrangement does not reduce the cash available for trading and does not introduce additional foreign-exchange or market exposure under the program’s structure. The third offering, known as the Stock Yield Enhancement Program, allows eligible clients to earn income by lending fully paid shares. IBSJ lends those securities to short sellers and provides clients with 50% of the market-based borrowing rate.
Furthermore, the broker discloses both the prevailing market borrow rate and the portion paid to the client. For example, if the market borrowing rate reaches 4%, an eligible client would receive half of that rate, equivalent to 2% annually. Consequently, a client lending ¥1 million worth of shares at that rate could receive approximately ¥20,000 in annual income, assuming the rate and lending balance remain unchanged. Ramir Roque Cimafranca, Head of Interactive Brokers Securities Japan Inc., said the programs aim to help Japanese clients make greater use of their invested capital.
According to the broker, the three offerings cover margin financing, idle cash and securities lending, extending its broader focus on cost efficiency and transparency to Japan. IBSJ operates as an affiliate of Interactive Brokers Group and provides access to global markets through a single platform. Clients can trade products including stocks, options, futures and CFDs while accessing the company’s range of cost-focused investment services.
